On-Campus Access to EndNote Basic

IF YOU ARE ON CAMPUS:

Once you have created your account (see Creating Your Account tab), you may click on the direct link below to access EndNote Basic.

Off-Campus Access to EndNote Basic

IF YOU ARE OFF CAMPUS:

You will be able to access your EndNote Basic account through the link in the box above, but the links to full text and other paid resources will NOT work unless you are using HPU's cloud services (virtual desktop).

To read more about HPU's cloud services and to download the VMware View client software, click on the link below.

If you do not want to use HPU's cloud services, we recommend that you attach full-text pdfs to your references so that you will have off-campus access to them.  Please see the Editing References tab for information on how to attach full-text pdfs.

Firefox Download

EndNote Basic works best if you use Chrome as your browser.  Don't have Chrome?  Click on the link below for download/installation instructions.

What is EndNote Basic?

EndNote Basic is a free, web-based reference management program that allows you to:

  • Store and manage your references (from different databases and websites) in one central place
  • Edit references, add research notes, and attach full-text pdfs
  • Share your references with collaborators
  • Format a bibliography in the citation style of your choice
  • Insert formatted citations into Word documents (with the free Cite While You Write plugin)
NOTE: EndNote Basic was, until recently, called EndNote Web.  It is also sometimes referred to as EndNote Online.

EndNote Basic FAQs

Is EndNote Basic really free?

Yes.  Anyone is free to create an account; you do not need to be affiliated with HPU or any other institution.  However, if you create your account from an on-campus computer (or when using HPU Cloud Services off campus), you will have a "premium" account with a greater number of citation styles available.

Do I have to use my HPU email address?

No.  You can use any email address.

Which browsers are supported?  Do I need to download any programs?

We normally recommend using Firefox, but as of 2/28/16, the Firefox extension (plugin) is not working with the latest version of Firefox.  In the meantime, we recommend using Chrome.  If you would like to insert formatted citations directly in Word documents, you will need to download the Cite While You Write plugin.  You may read more about system requirements here.

What happens after I leave HPU?  Can I still access my EndNote Basic account?

You will be able to access your account as long as the email address you used to sign up remains active.  However, after a year of not signing on from an on-campus computer (or while using HPU Cloud Services off campus), your account will be downgraded to the most basic level, with fewer citation styles available (just the 20 most popular styles, which include APA and MLA).

Can I use EndNote Basic on a Mac?

Yes.  The Cite While You Write plugin is also available for Mac.
