What is the DSM-5?

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), written and maintained by the American Psychological Association (APA), classifies mental disorders. It is used as a reference source and as a diagnostic tool in healthcare, social work, and many other professional fields. The current, fifth version was published in 2013.

The DSM-5 is a great starting point for your research. Each entry includes

  • diagnostic features
  • associated features and disorders
  • culture and gender features
  • prevalence
  • course
  • familial pattern
  • differential diagnosis

You can read the DSM-5 either in print or online. Print versions are located at the Waterfront Library in the reference collection.

HPU Libraries also offer electronic access through the DSM-5 database. Clicking the link to DSM-5 allows you to access the entire manual online. You can browse the contents of the book or perform a search to find specific information.
