LaTeX simplifies the process of formatting a document, especially when dealing with mathematical formulae and equations. TeX is essentially a Markup Language (like HTML, XML and RTF). LaTeX is an extension of TeX. A standard for writing academic papers and project reports as well as producing theses, technical papers and books.
LaTeX compilers can be used online or can be installed on your computer (or mobile device). Instructions for installing a compiler on your computer are beyond the scope of this guide.
Browser-based LaTeX compilers don't require downloading/installing.
Overleaf - This free LaTeX compiler offers extra features and options for a subscription fee (for which there is a student discount). However, the free version is sufficient for most undergraduate and graduate level assignments. The site has many resources for getting started with LaTeX, including tutorials and templates.
ShareLaTeX - Has many of the same features as WriteLaTeX. (Requires registration to use.)
TEMPLATES for a variety of documents:
This site offers templates in many different categories, but the categories only contain a few templates each. The templates can be opened directly into WriteLatex. They also provide a typesetting service for a fee.
ShareLaTeX is a site that offers browser-based LaTeX editing. The site requires you to scroll down to see all the categories, but it offers many free templates.
