Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion: Immigration & Anti-Xenomisia

Background

Xenophobia is a "strong and unreasonable dislike or fear of people from other countries," according to Collins Dictionary. Migration is and always has been a common human practice, yet individuals and communities often face prejudice based on their status as immigrants. The term "xenophobia--with "phobia" meaning "fear"--is widely used to describe this. However, many many prefer "xenomisia"--with "misia" meaning "hate or hatred"--as it more accurately connotes the meaning of the concept, and reduces the likelihood that this prejudice will be inaccurately characterized as a "phobia," an anxiety disorder and can be beyond an individual's control. See Simmons University Library's Anti-Oppression LibGuide for more explanation on the suffix "misia."
