EndNote Basic: Downloading Installers

Learn how to use EndNote Basic to manage your references.

About This Page

EndNote Basic is entirely web-based, so you are not required to download/install anything in order to use it.  HOWEVER, it is much easier to collect references from databases and websites if you install two things:

  1. the Capture References, which makes it easier to capture webpages and references.
  2. the Cite While You Write plugin, if you would like to insert formatted citations directly into Word documents.  This plugin also installs the ResearchSoft Direct Export Helper, which often allows you to skip the manual import step when collecting references from databases

Follow the instructions on this page to download installers on your own computer.  If you are using an on-campus VDI, you will probably need to download and install the Firefox extension.  The Cite While You Write plugin should already be installed (if you open Microsoft Word and see the "EndNote" tab, the plugin has been installed). If the Cite While You Write plugin has NOT been installed on your on-campus computer, please contact the HPU Help Desk for assistance, since you need administrative privileges to install the plugin.

NOTE: as of 2/28/16, the Firefox extension (plugin) is not working with the latest version of Firefox.  In the meantime, we recommend using  "Capture Reference".

Downloading Installers

Follow the on-screen instructions for completing the set-up.

Depending on your computer, the tab may say "EndNote" or "EndNote Web."

Note that the ResearchSoft Direct Export Helper is installed on your computer when you install the Cite While You Write plugin.  The ResearchSoft Direct Export helper allows you to export references from many databases without having to manually import the reference file.  Please see the Collecting References tab for more information.
